Other Activities
As announced earlier the Second Korea-Turkey Friendship Baduk (Go) Tournament is a part of the celebration activities for the Korean New Year. Other activities being planned include but are not limited with:
- Saebae 새배
- A short ceremony where children bow down in front of their elders showing their respect and offering their best wishes for the new year after which they are subject to the wishes and wisdom of their elders.
- Changgi 장기 Tournament
- A version of Chinese Chess (Xiangqi) much similar than shogi but different enough to be called Korean Chess.
- Yutnolyi 윷놀이 Tournament
- A game that has become the traditional Korean family game Yutnolyi has been played since the age of Three Kingdoms. Yutnolyi is similar to pachisi in its game play. Instead of casting die players throw four sticks with a semi-circle section to see who gets ahead in a race to move all their pieces back to the starting point. Traditionally the game surface is a cloth with either seashells or buttons sewn in a crossed out box shape. Nowadays different boards from plastic to paper can be found with the path printed on it. The game can be found in almost every celebration with lots of people gathered around it cheering for a team or just the best play. Check out the article on wikipedia for more details.
- Jegichagi 제기차기 Contest
- Jegichagi is a game of balance, dexterity and agility, where the person playing tries to keep a shuttlecock from touching the ground as long as possible by kicking only. Traditionally the shuttlecock is made from coins with holes in their middle to provide the weight and hanji to slow the fall. Rules of play differ from event to event on a scale from free style to using only one side of one foot. Contests may be between two or more players individually, as a group, in teams etc. Please refer to the wikipedia article on Jegichagi for a detailed explanation.
- Pitch-pot 투호놀이 Contest
- Another traditional game also known as "The Scholar's Arrow-Throwing Game" is a physical game requiring balance and dexterity. The game consists of throwing arrows at a narrow necked pot (traditionally metal) placed a distance away from the players. Players take turns trying to get the arrows in to the pot. Rules of ending and scoring the game vary. A little more on the game's background and a couple of pictures can be found on wikipedia.
- Chicken Fighting 닭싸움 Contest
- Yet another physical game testing the balance, wit, dexterity and agility of the contestants. Players hold up their right foot and try to knock down or throw their opponents off balance while trying to keep their balance on one foot (usually left). Contestants may hold their leg up with both hands or one but they can only use their knee or body to attack their rivals balance. The player losing balance enough to put their other foot down or falls to the ground is eliminated.
- Arm Wrestling Contest
- No definition entered since it is a world renown sport.
- Singing Contest
- A contest where participants contend with each other over subjects such as vocal beauty, performance, clarity etc. singing in Korean.
- Calligraphy 붓글씨
- Korean Art Of Calligraphy will be introduced and demonstrated in a separate area. Later participants will be aided in writing if they want to try it for themselves.
